Thirteen Reasons Why I’m Famous In Love…?

I’ve recently finished watching two new television series, which you can probably guess from the title of this post, are Thirteen Reasons Why and Famous in Love. While these two shows could literally not be more opposite from each other in terms of content, they do share one thing in common: both of these series were adapted for television from popular books. I have read the book Thirteen Reasons Why and very much enjoyed it, but I have yet to read Famous in Love. I just wanted to share my thoughts on these two new shows with you all and also hype them up a bit, because they deserve it!

Thirteen Reasons Why–

If you don’t already know the premise of this show, be forewarned, it’s dark. This show is about a high school Junior, Hannah Baker, who commits suicide and leaves behind a series of seven cassette tapes, each side of the tape being a reason why she decided to end her own life, and each reason also corresponds with a person. Each of the thirteen episodes is dedicated to a reason and a person. While this show sounds crazy intense, and it is, it’s a must watch. It is so powerful and spreads several messages that I think so many people tend to forget about. The first being that EVERY SINGLE THING we do affects somebody else in one way or another, even things that you think only affect yourself. We as humans tend to get so caught up in our own lives and it affects other people. The other message being that you never know what kind of battle someone is fighting, so just be kind to one another. This show does a fantastic job of showing how one minuscule thing a person says, that might seem harmless, could negatively impact someone else. So that joke you made to someone about their appearance or reputation, while not bad intentioned, it could have been the cherry on top to someones horrible day or more seriously, horrible life. If anything, this show reminds us to be mindful of others, and as my uncle has been telling me since day one, “every action has a consequence, good or bad”.

Another great thing about this show is the cast and ensemble of different characters. I don’t want to say much about the characters because it will totally ruin the plot. But if you have seen the show and are reading this, I will say this: Clay Jensen is adorkable and oh-so relatable, Jeff Atkins deserved better(!!!!!), Courtney pretty much sucks, Bryce is actually the devil reincarnate and I hate so much that you fall in love with the character of Hannah throughout the show, all the while knowing from the very beginning that she dies. I feel like I shouldn’t say anything else for fear of spoiling it, so just watch the show. And have a pack of tissues on standby for the last three episodes. Available to stream on Netflix.

Famous in Love–

I literally just finished binging all ten episodes of the first season and I’m actually sad about it because I want more. This series follows nobody college student Paige Townsen, who’s best friend drags her to an open audition for the lead in the latest YA novel movie adaptation (think Twilight or Hunger Games). Much to everyone’s dismay, Paige gets the part and is thrown into the life of the rich and famous. Thankfully she has her BFF Cassie and sexy roommate/love interest #1 Jake to hold her hand and support her. Enter Rainer Devon, her former bad boy costar and love interest #2, Alexis Glenn, catty starlet desperately trying to save her career, Nina Devon, Rainer’s mom and producer of the movie (aka Mrs. Ari from Entourage pretty much playing Dana Gordon), as well as a bunch of other supporting characters who all add the continuous drama. Paige has to figure out how to balance school and acting, as well as trying to sort out her feelings for the men in her life (even I’m torn on whether I’m #teamJake or #teamRainer…).

I feel like anyone who was a fan of 90210, Gossip Girl, or Pretty Little Liars would become addicted to this show WAY too easily, like I did. I have to say though, if Hollywood is anything like how they portray it, I want nothing to do with it. I am very content watching the drama unfold from the comfort of my couch. While this show definitely has its far fetched, ridiculous plot lines (aka Cassie’s way of making some quick $$$…), it is totally worth checking out. Plus the eye candy is pretty nice 😉 You can binge the entire first season on the Freeform app or Hulu, OR if you’re not into the whole binge thing, catch it on Freeform Tuesday’s at 9 pm PST right after PLL. Here’s to hoping everyone else loves it as much as I do and they renew it for a second season!
